Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about designing 3D models with AI and creating precise renders.
What is Prompt2CAD?
Prompt2CAD is a browser-based AI design tool that turns natural language descriptions into parametric 3D models and photorealistic renders. Describe what you want to build, iterate on proportions and details through conversation, render with geometry-grounded AI, and export to industry-standard CAD formats — all in one session, in one browser tab.
Who is Prompt2CAD for?
DIY home builders who need to visualize and dimension projects before cutting any wood. Custom wardrobe and storage specifiers fitting real rooms with real constraints — they start with the room and work inward to the furniture. Product and retail display designers who model fixtures for 3D printing or CNC and need clean STEP exports. Mechanical engineers and hardware developers iterating on functional parts — brackets, enclosures, assemblies — through conversation. And bespoke furniture and object designers exploring concepts for client presentations. The common thread: needing precise, parametric geometry.
Why can't I just describe furniture directly to an AI image generator like Nano Banana?
AI image generators are trained on images, not geometry. They fill in proportions, hardware, and details based on what they've seen — which rarely matches your exact vision. More broadly, the typical furniture design workflow stitches together 3–4 separate tools (sketching, 3D modeling, AI rendering, CAD export), and each handoff loses fidelity. Prompt2CAD collapses this into one session: you get a precise parametric model that anchors the renderer to your specification and exports directly to CAD formats.
How does Prompt2CAD improve AI rendering results?
Prompt2CAD generates a precise parametric 3D model from your description. You can export a rendering of that model — or provide it as a depth/geometry reference when using tools like Nano Banana — so the AI renderer has an exact structure to follow. The result is a photorealistic image that matches your design rather than an AI hallucination. This lets you produce and compare dozens of material and lighting variations in the time it would take to set up a single render manually.
Can I trust the dimensions? Precision is critical for my work.
The AI respects the dimensions you specify and verifies its own work by taking screenshots from multiple angles. For most designs, dimensions are accurate. However, in long iterative sessions (50+ messages), earlier constraints can occasionally drift — a known limitation we are actively fixing. If you notice a dimension has changed, tell the AI to correct it and it will. We are building a dimension-locking feature that will let you pin critical measurements so they cannot be altered by subsequent edits.
Do I need CAD experience to use Prompt2CAD?
No. You describe what you want the same way you'd explain it to a colleague or a carpenter — "a workbench 9 feet wide with a miter-saw mount in the center" or "a walk-in wardrobe, left wall 2.9m, right wall 3.18m, sloped ceiling." The AI handles geometry, dimensions, materials, and structural logic. Refine conversationally: "move the wheels back a bit," "add a drawer at the bottom," "make the shelves thicker." Prompt2CAD also works in multiple languages.
What can it design?
Prompt2CAD is strongest with rectilinear objects — wardrobes, bookshelves, kitchen runs, desks, tables, cabinets, storage walls, and room dividers. These categories score 0.88–0.99 in our quality benchmarks. Beyond furniture, users also design retail display fixtures, hardware enclosures, mechanical brackets, and other manufactured objects. Organic shapes and upholstered furniture are possible but less refined.
Can I use Prompt2CAD for non-furniture objects?
Yes. While the product is optimized for furniture and interior objects, users successfully design retail display fixtures, product trays for 3D printing, mechanical brackets, electronics enclosures, and other manufactured objects. The key requirement is that the object can be described in terms of geometric primitives with precise dimensions. If you can explain it in words and numbers, Prompt2CAD can likely model it.
What are parametric models?
Parametric models are driven by adjustable parameters — width, height, number of shelves, door style, etc. Change a parameter via a slider or number input, and the entire model recalculates and re-renders instantly. This lets you explore design variations without starting over.
Can I upload reference images?
Yes. You can paste or upload images into the chat. The AI uses them as design inspiration — it will analyze the style, proportions, and features and incorporate them into the model.
What export formats are supported?
Seven formats: STEP (.step) for CAD interchange (Fusion 360, FreeCAD, SolidWorks), DXF (.dxf) for CAD software, DAE (.dae) for SketchUp Free with materials intact, OBJ (.obj + .mtl in a .zip) with full material definitions, STL (.stl) for 3D printing, GLB (.glb) for web visualization, and PNG (.png) for viewport screenshots.
How much does Prompt2CAD cost?
New users get 120 free credits — enough for 1 design with several iterations. Each new design costs 30 credits; refining an existing model costs 15 credits. When you need more, top up with $10 for 1,000 credits (~11 full designs with refinements, or ~33 new designs without). No subscription required.
Where are my designs stored?
Designs are stored in your browser's local storage and persist across sessions. You can create multiple projects and switch between them. To share a design with a carpenter, fabricator, or client, export it to STEP, DXF, or any other supported format.
Can the AI see the 3D model it's building?
Yes. The AI takes screenshots of the viewport to verify its work — typically from multiple angles. If something looks wrong, it reads the code, identifies the issue, and fixes it iteratively.
What AI model powers Prompt2CAD?
Google Gemini, accessed through the Google GenAI API. The AI has been instructed with furniture design expertise, realistic material dimensions, and best practices for parametric modeling.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Prompt2CAD runs entirely in your web browser. There's nothing to download or install — just visit prompt2cad.com and start designing.
